Infographic Series: “What’s Open at the Y?”
As New Jersey slowly permitted the reopening of various programs and facilities for specific age groups and populations, YMCA staff at all levels, departments, and locations were hearing the same question: “What’s Open at the Y?”
APPROACH & OUTCOME
Sometimes the fastest way to clearly communicate complex information is through the use of infographics. In this case, simplifying the question and answer in a grid format was the most straightforward solution—with locations along the top row, specific programming listed down the left-hand column (grouped by area/type), and a red/yellow/green traffic light-style indicator system in between to instantly inform the viewer.
The resulting “What’s Open at the Y?” infographic effectively distilled a complex set of questions and answers for multiple audiences into a single, simple visual solution. The graphic was a mainstay on the Greater Somerset County YMCA website for months, continually updated with every incremental reduction in restrictions on capacity, participation, PPE, and other measures. This simple infographic helped bring a bit of clarity and reliability to the chaos of everyday life in 2020 and 2021.
This project is an example of the player-coach role I pivoted into while at Greater Somerset County YMCA as the organization recovered from impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, including significantly reduced staffing levels in areas like marketing, finance, and HR.
