2008 CD Package: ‘Mama Doni Sings “I Love Herring” & Other Fish Shticks for Kids’
The Mama Doni Band sought to establish their presence in the niche children’s Jewish folk music market with their debut album. In a crowded children’s music landscape, the band needed packaging that would resonate with both children and their parents while authentically representing Jewish cultural themes in an accessible, joyful way. A complete CD package was required, including all printed components that would serve as the primary physical touchpoint for families discovering the band’s music. The Mama Doni Band commissioned The Pixelle LLC to develop comprehensive branding and package design that would position their debut album as both culturally meaningful and delightfully kid-friendly.
APPROACH & OUTCOME
Client discovery sessions were conducted to uncover key themes, values, aesthetic preferences, and core brand personality traits essential to the project. Must-haves, requirements, deadlines, and intended use cases were identified to ensure successful execution. The resulting insights informed a design approach that balanced cultural authenticity with whimsical appeal appropriate for young audiences.
A vibrant, distinctive CD package was designed, encompassing an imprinted CD label, front cover, back cover, and an insert booklet that unfolded into a small poster—transforming functional packaging into an interactive element that extended the playful experience beyond listening. Original photography from a coordinating client photo shoot was expertly color-corrected, retouched, and isolated using layer masks. Selected stock imagery was seamlessly integrated to create a cohesive kid-friendly whimsical aesthetic that brought the album’s fish-themed humor to life.
The custom branding, including color palettes and logos, was designed to coordinate seamlessly across all deliverables, including the band’s website, ensuring a consistent brand presence across digital and physical touchpoints. The finished CD package successfully positioned The Mama Doni Band’s debut album as both culturally grounded and joyfully accessible, supporting the band’s entry into the children’s Jewish folk music market with a memorable visual identity that resonated with families.
